Innovative PSS configurator revolutionizes product-service design in maritime industry
In collaboration with DTU Management, Coignite has developed a pioneering configurator for the design of product-service systems (PSS) in the maritime industry. The solution translates five years of research into an interactive tool that helps companies optimize their product and service mix with a focus on sustainability.

The challenge
DTU Management faced a complex challenge: How could five years of research work in product-service systems be made accessible and applicable to the maritime industry? There was a lack of a tool that could:
- Translating research into practice
- Visualize complex relationships between products and services
- Enable users to analyze and optimize their solutions with a strong focus on sustainability
In addition, there was a need for the tool to be used both in teaching and by representatives from industry.
The solution
In close collaboration with DTU Management, Coignite developed an easy-to-use PSS configurator that enables users to work interactively with complex data and contexts within product-service systems. The solution consisted of several key features:
- Interactive research results: Users can explore different combinations of products and services and see the consequences of their choices in real time.
- Activity cycle analysis: The tool provides insight into how services are distributed across the three key phases of a user activity cycle.
- Sharing results: Users can save their configurations, share them with others, and generate detailed reports that can be used as a basis for decision-making.
- Web-based access: Developed as a responsive web application that ensures cross-platform accessibility.
Using Angular and database integration, research data from DTU was organized into an intuitive tool that makes advanced analyses simple and action-oriented.
Collaboration
The collaboration with DTU Management was characterised by a close and iterative process where we worked together with researchers to ensure that the tool reflected their research results. Workshops and tests with PhD students and professors have helped shape the expression and function of the tool.
Results
The solution delivered significant results for both DTU Management and the maritime industry:
- Practical application of research: Five years of research was translated into a tool that creates value in practice.
- Strengthened teaching: The tool is used today as part of DTU's teaching programmes.
- Industrial Value: Maritime companies have embraced the tool, praising it for its ability to support sustainable decisions.
- Focus on sustainability: The configurator helps users make choices that reduce environmental impact through better product-service compositions.
